Ball Scanner Type BS

is a testing and sorting machine for the non-destructive examination of the surface-quality of bearing balls. It uses an optical method, eddy-current and vibration method. Balls are fed from the center to the left and the right monitoring point.

The Ball Scanner is the automatic machine by KROB for the defectometric examination of the surface-quality of bearing balls. The functionality and the comfort of operation has improved by employing a modern digital technology in comparison to the preceding machines.

The automatic testing and sorting machines of type BS are intended for the defectometric inspection of defects on the surface of steel balls of diameter within the rated extent from 2 - 3 mm, 25 - 42 mm.

Defective balls are sorted out by a newly designed and fully digitalised technology. The three simultaneously used testing methods - optical EOT, eddy-current ECT and vibration sensor EVT (it is not by BS 0203) - enable a simultaneous examination for point defects and polish defects (the optical method and EVT) and for cracks, flats or shape defects ECT (the eddy-current method). The check for point defects is evaluated in comparison to either relative or absolute standards. The ECT, EOT and EVT methods are used for all automatic machines BS.

If a ball that has passed through the monitoring point is found to be defective, the machine differentiates between the defects that were detected by the optical testers EOT1 and EOT2 (i.e. the ball can be repairable) and the defects found by the EVT methods and by the eddy-current testers (the differential probe with two possible phase selections - this ball is non-repairable).

The eddy-current methods ECT1 and ECT2 have two independent optimally adjustable phase selections and amplification which guarantee a simultaneous examination with the maximum sensitivity for both cracks and flats on a surface of a ball. Both methods have now been complemented by the new Noise Methods - ECT1n und ECT2n. These methods enable not only a sorting of the balls according to defects of type ECT1 and ECT2 but also according to the quality of the whole surface.

The EVT Method enables not only a sorting out of balls with shape defects but also the assessing of vibrations in the monitoring point permits a constant overview of the condition of the mechanical system (bearings, spherocone roller...) as a poorer or rougher rotation of the ball in the monitoring point leads to greater vibration and so to an increased signal which is then assessed by the EVT Method.

The automatic machine of type BASC has two separate control systems that allow an independent functioning of the right side and the left side of the machine. The machine sorts the balls after testing into three categories:

  • good (OK)
  • repairable (optical defects) – these balls can be washed and tested again, because the reason for the optical errors is usually dirt
  • non-repairable – defects found by the eddy-current method or by the vibration sensor

Two separate control systems allow an independent functioning of the right side and the left side of the machine and an independent termination on both sides of the machine after the pre-selected amount of OK balls has been sorted. All three outlets (OK, EOT, ECT/EVT) on both sides of the machine have ball counters. Of course, balls with different diameters can be checked simultaneously on the right and the left side of the machine.

The automatic machines BS have different basic layout in comparison to the automatic machines BASC. The main differences are:

  • Feeding of balls to the right and the left monitoring points is carried out in the middle of the machines.
  • The BS 2542 machine does not have pre-sorter for balls with diameter deviations. It is possible to connect the Diameter Sorter DS with precision ± 0.002mm to the OK ball outlet.
  • The BS 0203 machine has two designs:
    • with pre-sorters
    • without pre-sorters
  • The BS 2542 SCAN of the ball surface is controlled by means of the spherocone roller velocity.
  • The housing of a mechanical part is divided into two parts. The first part behind the front panel is accessible for the operating personnel after pushing aside the upper cover. (There is only safe voltage 24 V here.) The rest of the electrical equipment with the higher voltage is placed in the second part of the housing that is not accessible for users.
  • The BS 2542 ball outlets are equipped with rubber damping segments because of the mass of the balls.

Since the year 2009 we have been supplying our Balls Scanners of Type BS only in the AS design. The machines supplied with this design can be used both in the STD (STanDard) and the AS (AeroSpace) regimes. The customer just needs to apply the correct type of spherocone roller for the chosen regime. For a more detailed explanation – see MODIFICATION AS

For checking the ball surface quality of clean and dry steel balls by the most exacting users KROB delivers Ball Scanners with modification WD (Width Different - only available on special request to the manufacturer). Note: The Ball Scanner BS 0203 is only available in the variant AS (Aerospace). This is, therefore, not simply a modification.

In standard form the machine is delivered without containers for sorted balls. The machine is packed in a wooden box when it is transported overseas or on request.

It is possible to deliver the stands (special accessories), Ball Transporters (BT, BTG), etc. – in accordance with individual requirements of the respective customer.
